Stephen  P. Welkie , 92, of 532 South Mill St., St. Clair, died Friday at Geisinger Regional Medical Center, Danville.

 

Born in New Philadelphia, July 29, 1923.  He was a son of Andrew and Mary (Haliski) Welkie.

 

As a young man he worked as a paper boy for the Pottsville Republican and in the coal industry.  He also worked at Phillip and Jones, PS Canfield Trucking, Repplier Coal Company, Sun Oil Company, and Hamilton Trucking.  He then worked for (30) years with the Reading and Conrail railroads as a conductor.   

 

Stephen was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, St. Clair.

 

He was preceded in death by brothers John, Joseph, Michael, Andrew and Paul, sisters Anna Butchko, Margaret Lynch, and Mary Schlosser.

 

Surviving are his wife of (55) years Eileen (Harrison) Welkie; daughter Eileen Berger and her husband Jim of Warrenton, VA; sons Stephen Welkie of Groton, CT; Paul Welkie and his wife Christine of St. Clair; a brother George of Baltimore, sisters Rose Vesay  of Minersville; Helen Pilkus of Easton. Stephen was adored by his (5) Grandchildren – Christopher, Elizabeth, Kyle, Justin and Andrew; Nieces and Nephews.

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Monday from St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 250 E. Hancock St., St. Clair with The Rev. Christopher Zelonis officiating. . Friends may call from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM Monday at Bruce T. Hart Funeral Home  110 N. Second St. St. Clair.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Clare of Assisi Memorial Fund at the above address.  Burial will be in Queen of the Universe Cemetery, Pottsville.
