EULOGY FOR MY SISTER LINDA ARLENE JAMES SHISTLE

I would like to pay an honor to two of my sisters. First, my younger sister Linda who was the seventh of our eight children family who finally lost her battle to cancer.  She had been a 17-year cancer survivor. She was predeceased by her husband Paul to whom she was marries for 48 years and then widowed for six years.  She is survived by her three children, nine grandchildren, one great-grandson, two brothers, four sisters, three sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews AND a multitude of friends.

She described herself with a twinkle in her eye as an Escort Lady which most of us saw the humor in since she truly did do escort service.   However, she did it from behind the wheel of her truck by driving for the L&S Trucking Company out of Brandonville, PA when she escorted wide load modular homes from Pennsylvania along the East coast.

Seventeen years ago, on 10/17/2000 after a botched surgery, her entire stomach was removed. This resulted in about three-month coma, a loss of a hundred pounds and anguish for all. With the love of family, friends and her strong constitution she fought herself back to good health.  For a good 14 years, she maintained good health hovering on the hundred-pound range by “eating like a bird. “She would chuckle since this meant eating tiny portions six to eight times a day since all she had was a surgical re-constructed apple sized pouch made from her intestine, according to her doctor.  That meant in her words she was a “cheap date” since she didn’t need much food, so her husband Paul took up the slack!   Though she quit smoking she was constantly bombarded with second-hand smoke from others.   She had said many, many, times "DON’T SMOKE!”  Or “The hell with them, they’ll find out!”

She would stop at our home in Connecticut many times on her way with her little snack bag to carry her through the five hundred or thousand mile trips up the east coast as far as the Canadian border.

My second honor goes to my kid sister Janet (the youngest of the eight of us) who also is a widow and raised three children. She deserves the Florence Nightingale award since she was Linda’s primary caregiver, landlord, chauffeur, and confidant, during Linda’s declining years.  Janet works full time and still made time to help Linda devoting a tremendous amount of time and energy to her. She was truly Linda’s angel.

My condolences to the family on the passing of Linda Shistle.  Linda and the James family were cousins to my late husband, Robert C. Lindenmuth, who passed away nearly four years ago this month.  When Bob learned of Linda’s health conditions many years ago, they began to encourage one another through emails and cards, as they knew the challenges of long-term and chronic illness. May God give you peace and comfort this day and in the days and months ahead.
