Mandycz

Leonard A. Mandycz Sr., of Bath, passed away peacefully on Friday, the morning of his 91st birthday, at Broad Mountain Health & Rehabilitation Center in Frackville.  Lenny had style, so anyone who knew and loved him certainly wouldn't be surprised that his departure from this earth was on his birthday.

Born in Swoyersville on July 22, 1925, he was a son of the late Anthony and Mary (Brutko) Mandycz.

A Navy veteran of WWII, Lenny proudly served on the USS John Davenport and was honorably discharged in 1946.

Lenny married in 1947, and moved his family to New Jersey in the early 1950's along with brothers and cousins to work at General Motors.  A passion for the open road led him to driving automotive transport trailers, and he ultimately retired as a petroleum transport driver. Up until spring of this year, he was still faithfully making long Sunday drives after church from Bath to Frackville to visit his wife at Broad Mountain.

In his earlier years, he enjoyed camping in the Appalachian mountains, hunting and fishing.  He was a long-time fan of the NY Mets.  In recent years, he developed a flair for cooking, and his specialty was chicken cacciatore.  In his spare time, he enjoyed playing cards, making puzzles and reading western novels.  His musical taste ranged from Strauss waltzes and Mantovani to polkas and Johnny Cash.  He enjoyed kielbasa at Easter, family dinners on the deck, vineyard trips and a nice glass of merlot.  To know Lenny was to love him.  He had a pleasant disposition, an inner strength and a zest for life.  His warm smile made his blue eyes dance, and this was a gift that he gave to everyone he met.

Lenny was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Bath and, in earlier years, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Order of the Eagles and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by sisters Josephine Riley, Helen Federici, and Mary Timek; and brothers George, Anthony and Raymond Mandycz.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 69 years Violetta (Topic) Mandycz; devoted daughter Marie Bobroski of Mountainside, NJ; son Leonard Mandycz Jr. and his wife Barbara of Key West, FL; loving grandchildren Donna Simunovic, Michael Bobroski, Nicole Mandycz and Jonathen Mandycz; nieces, nephews and a circle of friends who will forever miss him.

A Memorial Mass will be held 10:00AM Thursday July 28, 2015 at Holy Family Parish 574 Bennett St, Luzerne, PA 18709. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Central PA , 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Interment will be in St. John Nepomucene Cemetery, Courtdale
